Job Description:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of youth conservation volunteers, has an exciting opportunity in our Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps Department. The position is based in Pittsburgh, PA.

America’s #1 youth conservation service organization seeks a qualified candidate who will work with the Project Manager and Crew Leaders of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps to support field crews during the summer season. The PA will provide training, supervisory, logistical and administrative support to crews, and will occasionally act as a field leader when additional supervision is required. The PA will also work with the Program Manager before the summer season to develop program structure and assist in the hiring of members. This position will require office work, field work and regional travel.

Essential Functions:

  • Work with Program Manager to develop Summer Program Plan, and assist in member recruitment, hiring and enrollment.
  • Assist in training of members and providing technical oversight on field projects such as trail construction, vegetation management and park maintenance.
  • Assist Manager and Leaders with administrative tasks, including budget tracking, payroll and project reporting.
  • Provide logistical support in procuring tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate with agency partners to develop field projects and ensure quality work outcomes.
  • Travel to worksites and supervise crews in conjunction with Leaders when additional support is needed involving project oversight, training and group development.
  • Ensure risk management protocol is being followed by managing mitigation plans and tracking incident reporting.
  • Help facilitate environmental education for crew members.
  • Follow, enforce and explain SCA policies and procedures.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Develop agency partner relationships.
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion when making programmatic decisions.
  • Perform administrative and field based functions necessary for the successful implementation of the program.
  • Ensure that SCA field operating standards are implemented and upheld.
  • Serve as a program responder.
  • Other duties as assigned and needed.

Performance Measures/Accountabilities:

  • Show interest and enthusiasm in developing leadership abilities and furthering a career in Conservation Leadership.
  • Assure that all assigned community programs meet SCA Field Operation Standards for quality and safety.
  • Provide clear standards and direction for the assigned programs.
  • Provide excellent customer service, nurture relationships and help assure retention of crew leaders, agency partners and students/parents.
  • Facilitate a strong teamwork environment by building respectful, productive partnerships within Youth Programs and all other SCA departments.
  • Display a positive and professional image of self, the department and the organization.
  • Maintain understanding and compliance of SCA and program policies, enforcing policy during program.
  • Understand and model SCA’s Operating Values and Leadership Behaviors
  • Understand and abide by policies and guidelines in SCA’s Staff Handbook

Experience and Skills:

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have a Motor Vehicle Record that meets SCA standards.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Previous experience leading SCA Programs or similar conservation crew experience required.
  • Proficiency in conservation workskills required, including trail construction, vegetation management and park maintenance
  • Experience supervising youth or young adult populations, preferably in an outdoor setting
  • Experience facilitating environmental education preferred
  • Must have a current First Aid and CPR certification, valid through the summer.
