Job Description:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of youth conservation volunteers, has an exciting opportunity in our Advancement Department. The position is based in Arlington, Virginia.

America’s #1 youth conservation service organization seeks a qualified applicant who will be responsible for the planning and implementation of programs and projects that strategically engage alumni in strengthening programs and provide tangible benefits to alumni and current members.

Serving as both an internal and external ambassador, the Director of Alumni Relations is charged with:

  • Developing and implementing strategies to engage alumni and cultivate a life-long connection to SCA;
  • Working across SCA departments to devise and execute a continuum of experiences and activities designed to appeal to a broad cross-section of alumni at various stages of personal and professional development;
  • Collaborating with colleagues in SCA regional offices to create and maintain pathways for alumni participation that advance the both regional and national goals;
  • Securing commitments from alumni to provide professional expertise and volunteer service;
  • Partnering with Advancement colleagues to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward alumni giving; and
  • Staffing the Alumni Council and serving as a liaison between The Council and executive leadership.

SCA has an alumni network of over 80,000 and up-to-date contact information for approximately half of these individuals. SCA’s alumni network includes individuals who have served our public lands in a variety of ways including SCA high school crews, corps, internships, and other programs over the last 60 years.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, implement and promote alumni programs that support SCA's strategic plan and fundraising goals in collaboration with colleagues within the Advancement Department.
  • Work closely with the Alumni Council, ensuring strong and productive relationships between its members and SCA leadership.
  • Working across SCA departments, ensure accurate and complete alumni database records. Capture contact, biographical and career information of new and existing alumni via surveys, projects (e.g. possible alumni directory), correspondence, website, postal returns, and other methods.
  • Establish and build relationships with a wide range of alumni, locally, regionally, and nationally. Maintain regular communication with alumni via direct contact, digital communications, web pages, online communities, social networks, and print publications.
  • Educate graduating program members about alumni benefits and engage them in ongoing alumni programs.
  • Collaborate with Advancement colleagues to increase philanthropic support from alumni; routinely identify and qualify alumni prospects for gifts; communicate and document activities via written contact reports filed in Luminate; and participate in periodic prospect management meetings.
  • Oversee and track the budget for Alumni Relations; within the Advancement budget, manage existing and/or additional alumni projects, services and communications.
  • Raise funds for select special projects and events in collaboration with Advancement colleagues

Supplemental Functions:

  • Network with individuals and organizations outside of SCA to keep up with the latest trends and best practices in alumni engagement and fundraising.
  • Define metrics and goals and track progress with regard to alumni engagement, donor conversion, and other objectives as defined by the strategic plan goals.
  • Work closely with Advancement and Program staff to uncover "lost" alumni and maximize outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Work closely with other SCA departments to ensure consistent messaging and outreach to alumni across channels.
  • Ensure the transmission of SCA values and brand and acts in accordance with those values and brand in dealings with other staff as well as target audiences.

Performance Measures/Accountabilities:

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of SCA programs and procedures and ability to translate same for segmented audiences.
  • Provide leadership to recognize challenges/opportunities, identify solutions, and implement best use of resources to meet SCA’s goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrate ability to plan and work towards deadlines both individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to adapt and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to motivate and activate high-level productivity and creativity from project teams and others
  • Understand and model SCA’s Operating Values and Leadership Behaviors
  • Understand and abide by policies and guidelines in SCA’s Staff Handbook

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, highly preferred.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in alumni relations, development and/or external affairs with demonstrated accomplishment in fostering productive relationships with volunteers and developing volunteer leadership
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues throughout the organization, alumni, other constituents and the public
  • The demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers
  • Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills
  • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve institutional goals
  • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines
  • Experience with Luminate (salesforce platform) or a similar constituent database
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed
